]]><![CDATA[SCOTUS, Tariffs, and the Texas Senate Race]]>https://professorbarrett.substack.com/p/scotus-tariffs-and-the-texas-senatehttps://professorbarrett.substack.com/p/scotus-tariffs-and-the-texas-senateSat, 21 Feb 2026 19:43:49 GMTIn a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled Trump cannot impose tariffs using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This greatly limits his ability to set tariffs at will and denies him a policy tool he’s heavily relied on. At the same time, there are other, less flexible paths to setting tariffs so the story isn’t over yet.

The upcoming Texas Senate primary features two, high-profile races. On the Republican side, Senator John Cornyn is fighting a major challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. On the Democratic side, State Senator James Talarico and US Representative Jasmine Crockett are in another close contest. Talarico has notably emphasized his Christian faith, and argued that scripture support progressive policy positions including abortion rights.

On Jan. 3, the United States launched Operation Absolute Resolve, capturing wanted drug kingpin and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Perhaps in response, on Jan. 15, the Chinese government revealed footage of the People’s Liberation Army conducting a mock decapitation strike training exercise. Such a threat by Beijing should be taken seriously, but how likely is it?
